Filming Day One

On Saturday night, we started our filming. This was the first time that Tavonga and the rest of us have been available to film these holidays. We rang our friend who came and collected us all and picked up Tavonga and we then drove to Adam's house to begin filming.

When we arrived at Adams house, I thought it would be a good idea to film selected parts of the video that we may not have necessarily included in the storyboard but we could use as fillers, for example; the pan of the bottle of wine on the side of the kitchen unit. It is shots like these that should gain us marks for creativity and different shot types that we can experiment with during the editing process.

A slight problem with this filming session was that we didn't have a tri-pod or anything for the phones to stand on so that we could get a nice and steady shot, instead we just had to make sure that we could keep as still as possible, and at times place the phones and ipads on flat surfaces. We checked every shot we got straight away as we got them to ensure that they were adequate and if not, we would re-shoot them.

We filmed in chronological order. We thought this would be the best as the part of the video we were filming was the narrative bit at the start with no music to set the scene. Chronological order worked really well as we could ensure that we got every single shot that we needed and also we could add in some new shots if we saw a good opportunity to do so. For example, I suggested that we place the camera inside the cupboard when Eboni is walking through the kitchen so that it would be a good POV shot from inside when Eboni was opening it and taking the glass out as we hadn't included a point of view shot as of yet. So, after we got the initial over the shoulder shot, I told her to do it again after I had placed the phone upright in the cupboard and pressed film.

Another idea that I posed was to have Eboni come into the kitchen and fling her keys and bag on the table, however this wasn't just a long shot with a steady camera, I decided to see what it would look like if it were placed on the actual table and the keys were thrown towards it making it a low angle shot. This worked extremely well.

When filming, Eboni was acting for the majority and so she couldn't do much filming, this left the work to myself and Adam. During the first filming session, Adam did quite a few of the slow motion shots as it was on his phone that we were able to do that, however, this meant that I was in charge of capturing the shots from other angles. I made it a priority to not use the same sort of shots in all the parts, for example, when Tavonga is stood against the surface I took a chair against the door and lifted the camera to my height to form a good quality high angle shot which portrayed the emotion he was feeling at this point in time, low and small.

The only concern I have with this filming session was that it was all done using both an ipad and an iPhone and last time we mixed platforms for filming we had to re-film due to the fact that the frames were different sizes on the iphones.
